Hi guys, today I have a book review for you! Thank you Jess for your book suggestion! Read her review here! Now, to get transport you into the world of Start read this Goodreads review:
“Making friends has never been Elise Dembowski’s strong suit. All throughout her life, she’s been the butt of every joke and the outsider in every conversation. When a final attempt at popularity fails, Elise nearly gives up. Then she stumbles upon a warehouse party where she meets Vicky, a girl in a band who accepts her; Char, a cute, yet mysterious disc jockey; Pippa, a carefree spirit from England; and most importantly, a love for DJing.
Told in a refreshingly genuine and laugh-out-loud funny voice, THIS SONG WILL SAVE YOUR LIFE is an exuberant novel about identity, friendship, and the power of music to bring people together.”
I must start off with how much I loved this book. The meaning, to me, is to be your self. You can try to change your appearance or style. You can lie about your feelings and opinions. But at the end of the day, what’s the point? To impress people with a ghost?
Elsie says this perfectly:
“You think it’s so easy to change yourself. You think it’s so easy, but it’s not. True, things don’t stay the same forever: couches are replaced, boys leave, you discover a song, your body becomes forever scarred. And with each of these moments you change and change again, your true self spinning, shifting positions- but always at last it returns to you, like a dancer on the floor. Because throughout it all, you are still, always, you: beautiful and bruised, known and unknowable. And isn’t that-just you-enough?”
Yes, it is enough. People come in and out of your life. If you spend your whole time trying to please everyone, then you are not really you. You are what everyone wants you to be, except you.
Leila Sales transports you into Start, an underground dance party. You meet charming characters such as Char, (Ha, read the book to find out why I call him charming), Vicky, Pippa and other fun characters. (Who also have awesome names!) And along the way you learn more about this wonderful girl named Elsie. Who just so happens to be learning who she is too. She finds new friends who except her for her. That is what a true friend is, they don’t ask you to change anything about yourself. With the help of her new found friends, underground dance party and talent, she gains confidence. Something that everyone needs. Something I have a trouble with. Maybe I could find an underground dance party and discover that I have mad Dj skills… Hmmm, possible.
Lelia Sales also includes a wonderful sounding playlist, which I can’t wait to check out!
